Family Fun Day

September 25, 2010 – Saturday from 3 P.M. to 8 P.M. West Nyack FD held a Family Fun Day at Germonds Park. This was for their 100 th Anniversary and a pay back to the community. There were many activities for kids including: Jumping castles, blowup slides, and games. There was also free mini golf for all people that attended. Also the Rockland County Sheriffs Dept. brought their arson dogs and their bomb squad equipment. As well as the county helicopter was there for show. In addition Clarkstown PD brought their armored vehicle from their C.I.R.T. (Critical Incident Response Team). The Rockland Fire Training Center donated their simulated smoke house and their fire extinguisher prop for the day. This was to show people proper way to use an extinguisher and what it looks like through smoke. The West Nyack FD had their fire prevention trailer and free give a ways to all. The fire department also did two demos of using the Jaws of Life and showed how to cut up cars. There were also free drinks and food by the firehouse. The food was prepared by David Charles Catering Service. To end the exciting day the West Nyack FD had an astounding fireworks display that all enjoyed watching.

175 Sickletown Road
Basement Fire

September 5, 2010 – At 5:12 P.M. Sunday evening West Nyack FD was dispatched to a Signal-10 Possible Structure Fire at 175 Sickletown Road. Upon arrival of First Assistant Chief Jason Papenmeyer (24-2) he stated he was on scene and it was a Signal-12. A Signal-12 means it is a working structure fire. As 24-Tanker(the first due pumper) arrived on scene Assistant Chief Papenmeyer stated it was a basement fire and had the first hand line stretched threw the rear of the structure. Lieutenant John Dudek (24-6) led the first hand line with Firefighters Kevin Leitner and Brian into the basement to extinguish the blaze, while another crew was conducting a primary search. Mutual Aid was received from Central Nyack FD (Dept. 2) for an F.A.S.T. (Firefighter Assist and Search Team) team. F.A.S.T. teams respond to any possible or confirmed fire in order to function as an emergency rescue team for firefighters who may get hurt or injured during initial fire attack. The fire was knocked down at 5:29 and the Signal-11 was given at 5:58. Signal-11 means the situation is under control. All units were back in quarters and in service at 6:45.

New City Structure Fire

August 26, 2010- Thursday morning at 5:44 A.M. New City FD (Dept 9) was dispatched to a Signal-10 possible structure at 10 Tamarac Avenue. Dennis Rodriguez who is the Captain (9-4) in New City FD was the first officer on scene and told 44-Control (Dispatch Center) it was a Signal-12. A Signal-12 is means it is a working structure fire. Minutes later command requested West Nyack FD (Dept 24) to the scene with a pumper with manpower. First Lieutenant Brian Leitner (24-4) and 24-1750 (1992 Pierce) were responding to the scene within minuets. By the time West Nyack FD was on scene it was an exterior operation with hand lines and tower ladder operations. After the fire was put out members of West Nyack FD and New City FD were sent inside to overhaul. Shortly after all Dept 24 units were sent on a Signal-14. A Signal-14 is when a unit is told to return or is returning to quarters. When the truck returned back to quarters the men cleaned the equipment for the next alarm.

New City Structure Fire

August 22, 2010 – Sunday morning at 12:37 a.m. New City FD (Dept. 9) was dispatched to a Signal-10 Possible Structure Fire at 5 Hearth Court. First Assistant Chief Kenny Flynn (9-2) was the first officer on scene. He advised control it was a Signal-12 at 12:41 a.m. A Signal-12 is means it is a working structure fire. Minutes later 9-Command requested West Nyack FD (Dept. 24) to the scene with a pumper. First Lieutenant Brian Leitner (24-4) and 24-1750 (1992 Pierce) responded three minutes after dispatch. 24-4 signed the truck on scene at 12:56 a.m. and command gave orders to stretch a second line inside. The members of West Nyack stretched the second line and opened ceilings. Shortly after, other members of West Nyack FD (Dept 24), Congers FD (Dept 3), and Nanuet FD (Dept 8) were sent to relieve the firefighters inside and were told to overhaul. All Dept 24 units were sent on a Signal-14 at 2:38 a.m. A Signal-14 is when a unit is told to return or is returning to quarters. When the truck returned back to quarters the men cleaned the equipment for the next alarm.

12 Strawtown Road
Structure Fire

August 10, 2010 – At 5:25 P.M. Tuesday evening West Nyack FD along with an A.M.A (Automatic Mutual Aid) from Blauvelt FD (Dept.1) were dispatched to a Signal-10 Possible Structure Fire at 12 Strawtown Road. Upon arrival of First Lieutenant Brian Leitner (24-4) he stated he was on scene and established command, he also stated there were workers still on the roof. Workers were redoing a tar roof and caused the attic and roof to catch on fire. Second Assistant Chief Brian Ulrich (24-3) signed on scene seconds after. Lieutenant Leitner and Firefighter Terrance Reynolds went to the roof to investigate and then Chief Ulrich transmitted a Signal-12. A Signal-12 means it is a working structure fire. A first line was stretched to the rear of the structure to a bedroom below the fire by Firefighters Brian and Jim Breen. A crew from the tower ladder along with a crew from the rescue went to the roof to ventilate. Mutual Aid was received from Central Nyack FD (Dept. 2) for an F.A.S.T. (Firefighter Assist and Search Team) team. F.A.S.T. teams respond to any possible or confirmed fire in order to function as an emergency rescue team for firefighters who may get hurt or injured during initial fire attack. Also Valley Cottage FD (Dept. 22) and New City FD (Dept. 9) were requested to the scene with a pumper. The Signal-11 was given by command at 6:17. Signal-11 means the situation is under control. All units were back in quarters and in service at 7:08.
