May 20, 2011 – At 5:45 A.M. Friday morning West Nyack FD was dispatched to a Signal-10 vehicle smoking involved in an auto accident north bound New York State Thruway mile marker 20.3. A Signal-10 is any kind of reported fire. Chief Jason Papenmeyer (24-1) and Second Assistant Chief Brian Leitner signed in service within minutes. 44-Control (Dispatch Center) radioed to 24-1 informing him that the car is fully engulfed. A few minutes later Lieutenant John Dudek (24-5) and 24-Tanker (2008 KME first due pumper) were in service. Second Assistant Chief Brian Leitner (24-3) signed on scene and established command at 5:53. 24-1 signed on scene seconds after and gave orders to 24-Tanker to stretch the front pre-connect. Lieutenant Dudek had firefighter Brian and firefighter Chung Wu, stretch the line to the fire. As himself and probationary firefighter Patrick Joyce gained entry to the trunk. 24-1750 (1992 Pierce Pumper) signed in service and were request to stage behind 24-Tanker. After the fire was extinguished Chief Papenmeyer transmitted a Signal-11 at 6:12 P.M. A Signal-11 means the situation is under control. Three minutes later 24-1 terminated command and sent all units back to quarters. All units were back in quarters and in service at 6:23 A.M.

March 8, 2011 – At 2:47 P.M. Tuesday afternoon West Nyack FD was dispatched to a Signal-18 vehicle leaking diesel fuel in the rear of Cambridge University Press, 110 Brookhill Drive. A Signal 18 is when hazardous materials are involved. Second Assistant Chief Brian Leitner (24-3) was on scene and established command 5 minutes after dispatched. Immediately 24-Command (24-3) requested the Rockland County Hazmat Team to the scene for approximately 20 gallons of diesel fuel on the ground so far from a punctured saddle tank on the truck. While 24-Tanker (2008 KME Pumper) was on their way command request for them to use absorbent booms to stop the flow of diesel fuel on the ground and also to use Plug N Dike and a 20 gallon blow up pool for the punctured saddle tank. Plug N Dike is a nontoxic, nonflammable blend of high absorption polymers in a blended bentonite base that forms an immediate seal. 24-Command also requested Central Nyack FD (Dept. 2) to be on Automatic Mutual Aid for all calls. After the crew from 24-Tanker stopped the leak there was approximately 40-50 gallons that had already leaked out of the saddle tank. When the Hazmat Team arrived on scene they helped clean up the fuel on the ground and also used a vacuum to empty the saddle tank. 24-3 then terminated command at 4:42 P.M. and sent all units back to quarters while an outside contracted Hazmat Company stayed on scene to clean up the rest of the contaminated material. All units were back in quarters and in service at 5:05 P.M.

January 12, 2011- Wednesday morning at 11:49 A.M. West Nyack FD (Dept 24) was dispatched to a structure fire, mutual aid for 24-Tower, 125 S. Greenbush Rd. in Orangeburg (Dept 11’s area). Chief Jason Papenmeyer (24-1), First Assistant Chief Brian Ulrich (24-2), and 24-Tower were all responding within a few minuets. While in route to the scene, 11-Command requested members of the West Nyack FD to go inside with hooks. The firefighters from West Nyack FD along with many other members of several departments were ordered to overhaul and hit any hot spots. The building which was on fire was both a warehouse and offices for a manufacturing company named Nice-Pak that made pre-moistened wipes. The building was 380,000-square-feet and had sprinklers which helped the fire from spreading. After the fire was out West Nyack FD was sent on a Signal-14. A Signal-14 is when a unit is told to return or is returning to quarters. 24-Tower was back in quarters and in service shortly after. Other Mutual Aid was also requested: Blauvelt FD (Dept 1), Central Nyack FD (Dept 2), Congers FD (Dept 3), Nanuet FD (Dept 8), Pearl River FD (Dept 12), Sparkill FD (Dept 16), Tappan FD (Dept 21), Valley Cottage FD (Dept 22) and Nyack FD (Dept 10) to stand by at 11-100.

January 10, 2011- Monday afternoon at 12:54 P.M. West Nyack FD (Dept 24) was dispatched to a Signal-10 Structure 100 Ludvigh Rd. This was a Mutual Aid call to Nanuet FD (Dept 8) that requested our F.A.S.T. (Firefighter Assist and Safety Team) team to respond. FAST teams respond to any possible or confirmed fire in order to function as an emergency rescue team for firefighters who may get hurt or injured during initial fire attack. First Lieutenant Chris Reynolds (24-4) and 24-Rescue were responding within minutes of dispatch. While on scene West Nyack FD were given orders to break up our members. Some were told to go inside to help as others stayed outside. After the fire was extinguished the rest of the men from West Nyack FD were sent inside to overhaul. Shortly there after, West Nyack FD was sent on a Signal-14. A Signal-14 is when a unit is told to return or is returning to quarters. 24-Rescue was back in quarters and in service shortly after. Other Mutual Aid was also requested to the scene: New City FD (Dept 9), Pearl River FD (Dept 12), Spring Valley FD (Dept 17) and South Spring Valley FD (Dept 25) to stand by at 8-100.

Garbage Truck Fire

January 3, 2011 – At 3:27 P.M. Monday afternoon West Nyack FD was dispatched to a Signal-10 Garbage Truck in front of 69 Western Highway just south of the Route 59 overpass. A Signal-10 is any kind of reported fire. First Assistant Chief Brian Ulrich (24-2) signed in service at 3:28 P.M. 44-Control (Dispatch Center) radioed to 24-2 informing him that the tires of the truck were on fire. A few minutes later Lieutenant Kevin Leitner (24-7) and 24-Tanker (2008 KME first due pumper) were in service. Once again 44-Control contacted 24-2 saying the rear of the truck is now on fire. First Assistant Chief Brian Ulrich (24-2) signed on scene and established command. He gave orders to 24-Tanker to stretch the front pre-connect. Lieutenant Leitner had firefighter Brian and probationary firefighter Anthony Campitiello, stretch the line to the fire. Lieutenant John Dudek (24-5) and 24-1750 (1992 Pierce Pumper) signed in service and were request to give there water to 24-Tanker. After the fire was extinguished Assistant Chief Ulrich transmitted a Signal 11 at 3:52 P.M. (Signal-11 means the situation is under control). Ten minuets later 24-2 terminated command and sent all units back to quarters. All units were back in quarters and in service at 4:09 P.M.
